Temperatures are lowering this winter, but that doesn’t mean the quality of your hearing aids needs to as well. Though you may not think there’s a connection between weather and hearing aids, colder and damper conditions during the winter months can present difficulties for your hearing technology. Luckily, there are several easy steps you can take to make sure everything keeps running smoothly.
Be Mindful of Moisture
With wetter winter weather conditions, it’s important to make sure moisture or condensation does not accumulate in your hearing aids. Excessive exposure to moist conditions can cause problems like:
- Muffled sounds
- Distorted sounds
- Static
- Reduced battery life
- Devices powering on and off
Keep Your Batteries Warm
Hearing aid batteries have to work harder during colder temperatures, which means they have a shorter lifespan. Get the most out of your batteries by keeping them at room temperature when you can.
Dry Your Devices Before Bed
A simple addition to your bedtime routine can sustain the lifespan of your hearing aids. At the end of the day, be sure to dry your hearing devices to take care of any moisture that accumulated throughout the day.
Open the battery compartment so it airs out or use a dehumidifier. If you have rechargeable hearing aids, a dry box can come in handy.
Bundle Up
Your winter style can also help protect your hearing aids. When heading outside, wear a hat or pair of earmuffs. You’ll be able to keep yourself and your hearing devices warm.
Take Your Hearing Aids Off
We usually recommend wearing your hearing aids all day, but it may be helpful to take them off while skiing, snowboarding or sledding. That way, you can be sure they stay safe as you enjoy your favorite winter weather activities.
