Allergies and viruses can affect performance, leading to a partial vacuum in the ear.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This negative pressure stretches the eardrum, creating a pocket or cyst that fills with old skin cells and waste material, which can become easily&nbsp;infected. In rare cases, cholesteatoma can be congenital (present at birth).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Are the Symptoms of Cholesteatoma?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Symptoms of cholesteatoma include drainage from the ear, a feeling of fullness, <a href=\"https:\/\/chsstl.org\/hearing\/hearing-loss\/hearing-tests\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/chsstl.org\/hearing\/hearing-loss\/hearing-tests\/\">hearing loss<\/a>, earache\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chsstl.org\/balance\/dizziness-balance\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/chsstl.org\/balance\/dizziness-balance\/\">dizziness<\/a>. Since these are also present in other conditions, tests such as CT scans and electronystagmography can be used to rule out other conditions and confirm the diagnosis. Cholesteatomas\u00a0continue to grow if not treated\u00a0and can lead to complications such as:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"list-col-2\"><li>Deafness. <\/li><li>Facial paralysis.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Brain abscess.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Meningitis.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Is Cholesteatoma Treated?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>An otolaryngologist will determine the size and <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/j.1365-2273.1976.tb00869.x\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/j.1365-2273.1976.tb00869.x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">growth rate of the cholesteatoma<\/a> and recommend treatment based on these findings. Controlling the infection with antibiotics or eardrops is a crucial first step.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have a&nbsp;large cholesteatoma&nbsp;it may&nbsp;be treated surgically. Performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis, the cholesteatoma is removed in order to eliminate the infection.
